Cross-Canada rail stoppage expected August 2024

Potentially significant delays related to the transport of goods due to an imminent labor dispute anticipated to hault rail movement across Canada in August 2024.

As a result of a recent ruling by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board that a strike by the union representing conductors, engineers and yard workers at Canada’s two major railways, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. would not pose any threat to the public, the rail lines are now planning to lock out these workers unless a deal is secured.

More than 375 million tons of cargo are transported by rail each year in Canada, much of which is made up of critical natural resources and agricultural products.

In the event a lockout occurs, there will be significant impact to Canadian supply chains.

Cargo currently on trains at the time of the lockout will be held in place.

Cargo arriving in Canada by air and sea that is destined for inland rail transport will require alternative transport (e.g., truck and/or barge transport, domestic air transport).

Cargo without alternative transport arrangements will be held at ports or rail junctions and will incur demurrage charges.

The highest risk will be for perishable goods or temperature-regulated goods. If you currently have cargo scheduled to arrive in Canada (by any mode) during the strike, we strongly recommend you contact your freight provider to make alternative arrangements for the transport of your cargo.
